About this event

We are looking for people from Millom and the surrounding area with an interest in photography and/or local history, community, and landscape, to take part in a collaborative project with professional Documentary Photographer, David Severn. The aim of the project is to tell a collective story of Millom by bringing together a range of visual material representing different facets of local culture: landscape, industry, community, folklore. Participants will be encouraged to create their own photographs for the project, but we will also explore ways of incorporating archive / family album pictures.

Over a series of workshop sessions, you will share stories and images with the group, and collectively discuss what helps to define Millom’s sense of place. With creative guidance from David, the output of these sessions will then be brought together in the form of a visual website.

In the spirit of collaboration and exchange, David will work simultaneously with the project group to produce a parallel visual exploration of his local area. He is based in Nottinghamshire and will be focussing on the ancient Sherwood Forest and surrounding villages. There are several parallels between Millom and Sherwood Forest, from the rise of industry (Iron in Millom and Coal in Sherwood) and subsequent deindustrialisation, to a landscape steeped in mythology and rich in natural beauty.

By presenting the work produced by participants in Millom alongside that of David in Sherwood Forest, the project intends to invite new connections between these two different environments.
